new shows overview

Of the 25 new shows debuting on Canadian (conventional) airwaves this fall, we are noticing the resurgence of the 1 hour drama, fewer comedies vying to achieve Big Bang status and the total decline of reality shows.

CITY TV has the fewest new shows with 1 dramas and 2 sci fi entries however they’ve acquired 2 shows from other networks (Blacklist and Dancing with the Stars), which should see loyal viewers following the shows to CITY TV.

CBC has acquired 5 new shows – 3 dramas, 1 documentary style show and the only reality show on air this fall. Given the success of The Handmaids Tale, the newest Margaret Atwood novel to air on CBC this fall ( Alias Grace) should be highly anticipated.

Global is next with 5 dramas and 3 comedies. Without question Will and Grace will repatriate past fans of the show and hopefully garner new ones. SWAT starring Shemar Moore is another highly anticipated show particularly with female fans of the engaging Moore.

CTV follows with 9 new entries – 4 comedies, 3 dramas, 1 sci – fi show and 1 comic book based show. There is much Buzz surrounding “Young Sheldon” and whether it will attract the mass Big Bang audience to a younger version of the nerdy character. The Good Doctor – heavily promoted on screens now looks to be a sure bet with viewers with its solid cast and unique story line.

The 2017-2018 season is all about playing to your strengths. For conventional broadcasters that means seeking out the new shows with broad impact, and for specialty channels, it’s all about honing in on specific target audiences.

At this year’s upfront presentations, Corus Entertainment played up its focus on building lifestyle content on Showcase and Bell Media called out tweaks coming to Comedy and Bravo.

Building off of its strongest single-show debut with the premiere of dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale Bell’s goal for Bravo is to add more “smart but bold premium TV”content in the fall and continue to attract more female audience.

Bell is also aiming to drive more female viewers to the male-heavy Comedy station with a new primetime programming strategy in September

Corus dominates with lifestyle properties and has decided to shift in the last year some of its content from WNetwork to HGTV (Property Brothers, Love it or List it and Master of Flip) and replace it with more dramatic content such as Nashville, Valor (New) and transferring from Showcase the third season of Outlander.

Showcase already exists in the dramatic space with shows like Mr. Robot and wants to build this Fall with more scripted series such as The Sinner, Transparent and Travelers.
